Kirill Lukonin: "A new era of decentralized self-organizing wireless networks"

Description

A new era of decentralized self-organizing wireless networks

Since the early 90s MANET and WMN (mesh) technologies are continuously evolving but unjustly deprived of attention, especially in Russia. A lot of commercial solutions from top vendors are called a mesh but they are not decentralized, their code is closed, and the cost is extremely high so they are not available for ordinary people and researchers. The solution is to use open source based technologies and Linux kernel.

The report is about the relevant mesh network technologies and why we should make a breakthrough in this area nowadays.

• A brief history of MANET and some major protocols overview (DSDV, AODV, OLSR, BABEL, BATMAN, BATMAN-ADV). The principal differences and the reasons of choosing BATMAN-ADV.

• Detailed overview of the BATMAN-ADV and best practices of implementation.

• Current state of the Linux kernel wireless stack in a nutshell, different hardware solutions and costs of equipment with examples of possible implementations.

• Demonstration of mesh network based on multiple routers you can buy freely in different stores.
